What is a Supreme Council of the 33rd Degree

In the universal Masonic tradition, a Supreme Council of the 33rd Degree is the sovereign body that guards the philosophical degrees of Masonry beyond the three symbolic degrees. Originating from the Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite and universally adopted by all major modern rites—including the Ancient and Primitive Rite of Memphis-Mizraim—it represents the administrative and doctrinal culmination of Masonic work not reserved to the Sovereign Sanctuary.

The Supreme Council of the 33rd Degree of Mexico operates under the obedience of the Sovereign Sanctuary of Mexico of the Rite of Memphis-Mizraim, in a full chain of filiation with the Lewis-Cox-Cruz, Jean-Maine-Bertiaux, and Ambelain-Kloppel-Gaudart de Soulages lineages converging in M∴S∴H∴ Mishel Arreola.

The bodies of the hierarchy

Under the jurisdiction of the Supreme Council of the 33rd Degree, four ritual bodies work successively, each responsible for a series of degrees:

Sovereign Rose-Croix Chapter	15° — 18°	Knight of the East, Prince of Jerusalem, Knight of the East and West, Knight Prince Rose-Croix. Body of Initiatic Passion, Death and Resurrection with Christian-Hermetic symbolism.
Sublime Areopagus Kadosh	19° — 30°	Great chivalric degrees. From Grand Pontiff to Grand Inquisitor Commander, culminating in Knight Kadosh. Work focused on justice, spiritual liberty and the final rectification of the Initiate.
Sublime Consistory	31° — 32°	Grand Inspector Inquisitor Commander and Sublime Prince of the Royal Secret. Intermediate administrative body preparing for the dignity of the 33°.
Supreme Council of the 33rd Degree	33°	Sovereign Grand Inspector General. The 33° is the summit of the universal philosophical hierarchy and the gateway to the Sovereign Sanctuary.

The T∴V∴P∴M∴ and the Sovereign Grand Commandery

The Supreme Council of the 33rd Degree of Mexico is presided over by the Thrice Powerful Master (T∴V∴P∴M∴) and Most Powerful Sovereign Grand Commander, a dignity that—through the historical convergence of the three lineages—corresponds to the current World Grand Hierophant 99°, M∴S∴H∴ Mishel Andrés Arreola Morales (i∴o∴ Althotas Alef).

This concentration of dignities in a single person is exceptional and derives from the triple convergence that the Hierophant embodies as head of the International Sanctuary, the National Sanctuary, the Symbolic Grand Orient and the Supreme Council. The presidency of the Supreme Council is exercised according to the constitutions of the body itself, with the assistance of the Sublime Inspectors General in office.

Relationship with the Sovereign Sanctuary and the SGO

The Supreme Council of the 33rd Degree is NOT the Sovereign Sanctuary, nor does it replace it. Its jurisdiction covers degrees 4° to 33°; the higher degrees (34° to 95°) correspond to the Sanctuary, and the symbolic degrees (1° to 3°) correspond to the Symbolic Grand Orient of Mexico.

The Supreme Council is, therefore, the philosophical bridge between the symbolic work of the blue lodges and the hierophantic dimension of the Sanctuary. Its task is to transmit, ritualize, and administer the degrees that prepare the Initiate for the summit of the hierarchy.

Bodies in obedience

Under the Supreme Council of the 33rd Degree of Mexico currently operates the Sublime Chapter Lodge of Perfection "HATOR" No. 1, which gathers the degrees 4° to 14°. The higher bodies (Rose-Croix Chapter, Areopagus Kadosh, Consistory) will be established by dispensation of the Supreme Council as the brothers who have reached the corresponding degrees are consolidated.

Approaching the Supreme Council

Access to philosophical degrees requires being a Master Mason in good standing in the Rite of Memphis-Mizraim, with sufficient time working in the symbolic lodge and the approval of both the Worshipful Master of the lodge of origin and the Supreme Council. No "honorary" degrees are granted in this body—each degree is worked with its complete ritual.

For information requests, authorities of sister obediences through inter-supreme communication, or institutional matters of the Council, correspondence is handled through the Sanctuary channel.
